Google’s AI note-taking tool, NotebookLM, just opened up to a younger crowd. Before, only people 18 and older could use it. Now, it’s available to anyone using Google Workspace for Education, regardless of age. Teens as young as 13 can also use it with regular accounts.
This change shows Google wants more students to try AI study aids. NotebookLM is more than a simple note app. It can turn class notes into podcast-like Audio Overviews and build Mind Maps to explain tough subjects. It also creates short, AI-narrated video summaries using your notes and files. The new Video Overview feature turns your sources into clips with slides, visuals, and key quotes from your documents. These tools help students understand and remember lessons better by mixing audio and video explanations.
Google is also focusing on safety. The tool uses stricter filters to block harmful or inappropriate content. No one at Google reviews the chats or uploads. Students’ data is not used to train Google’s AI models. These changes help protect student privacy, which has been a big concern with AI tools in schools.
The timing matters. OpenAI just added study mode for ChatGPT, making competition in AI learning apps even tougher. As the new school year begins, expect to see more tools and features competing for students’ attention.
